Held each year in mid-May, the Bike to Work Day campaign encourages commuters in Solano and Napa County (and region-wide) to try bicycling to work. Participants receive free bike bags and other goodies and are entered into prize drawings. Employers encourage their employees to bike to work and Energizer Stations are set up on Bike to Work Day. A Team Bike Challenge offers a friendly competition between teams of co-workers throughout May.
Bike to Work Day 2011Bike to Work 2011 was a huge success! In celebration of the 17th Annual Bike to Work Day, Solano and Napa residents rode their bicycles to work on May 12th, 2011. The day began with 27 Energizer Stations throughout Solano and Napa counties handing out water, breakfast treats, and messenger bags stuffed with bike-related goodies. Both seasoned cyclists and new enthusiasts chose the healthy commute this Bike to Work Day, pocketing their gas money and helping to improve the environment. |

The Chevrolegs, a team from the Avia Hotel, earned the title of Team Bike Challenge Winner in Napa County. A lively group consisting of educators and their former students, they pedaled their way through 1,225.9 miles during the month of May, earning 181 points! |

In Solano County it took a father, his co-worker, 2 children and a neighborhood friend to beat the reigning TBC team. The Vaca 5 won Solano County's Team Bike Challenge with 266 points and 1,211 miles earned by biking to work and school in addition to using their bikes to go to the movies and run errands. |

Jamie Simmons of Fairfield is Solano County's Bike Commuter of the Year. He made a commitment to use biking as an alternative and sustainable method of transportation, logging over 6,000 miles and a reduction of ¾ ton of CO2 emissions. A Quality Assurance Analyst at Anheuser-Busch, often Jamie can be spotted in cycling apparel on the soccer field with his 2 sons, who have also started the biking habit. He and his wife walk the talk by cycling kids to daycare, hauling groceries in their bike satchels, and even biking to Starbucks for a Friday night date. Additionally, Jamie serves as the Bike Coordinator at Anheuser-Busch including organizing 4 Tour de Cure teams with 86 participants and over $25,000 donated. |

Jim Wilson, Bike Commuter of the Year for Napa County, made a personal commitment to help "de-carbonize the economy" in 2008. He inspires his co-workers now, and has logged over 2,000 miles just since last summer, most of it from his commute from Napa to Fairfield where he works as a Quality Assurance Manager at Anheuser-Busch. Jim is not discouraged by rain, heat, or even by colliding with a moving vehicle. Beyond his daily commute, Jim has participated in 4 Tour de Cure events challenging himself with his first century ride in 2010 and personally raising $1000. Jim is constantly encouraging his co-workers to challenge themselves by sustainably commuting to work. Recently, Jim has been an activist in a bicycle challenge for all 12 AB Breweries in the U.S. With Jim's commitment, the Fairfield Brewery is expected to win! |
