Guide to Alternative Transportation Options

Bicycling – Bicycling to work can be a great alternative to driving.  It is less expensive while providing added health-benefits.  To get started:

  • Make sure that your employer has secure bike parking
  • Choose a route and try it before your first bike commute day
  • Check the mechanical safety of your bike yourself or at your local bike shop
  • Obtain the necessary repair tools and learn to use them

Carpools – A carpool is two or more commuters sharing a ride to the same company or several companies located near one another.  The advantages to carpooling include:

  • Savings on commute costs
  • Use of High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes in many cases which saves time and tolls
  • Help lower stress
  • Reduced wear and tear on your vehicle
  • Flexibility: carpool every day, a few days a month, or anywhere in between

Casual Carpooling – Casual carpooling is a flexible approach to commuting whereby drivers who wish to use the HOV lanes offer rides to potential passengers who line up at a common, convenient site to wait for rides into San Francisco.   Two popular casual carpool locations in Solano County are the Fairfield Transportation Center in Fairfield and the Curtola Park & Ride lot in Vallejo.

Ferry – Commuting by ferry from Vallejo to San Francisco is a comfortable, relaxing alternative to driving on bridges or in traffic.  Enjoy great views while avoiding gridlock. BayLink Ferry Information

Train – The Capitol Corridor runs between Sacramento and San Jose with many stops between.  The Davis, Suisun/Fairfield, and Martinez stations provide service to Solano and Napa counties.  Capitol Corridor schedules and information

Vanpools – A vanpool is a group of 7 to 15 people – who live at least 10 miles from where they work – sharing their commute in a van.  Here is how it works:

  • Vanpool riders pay a low monthly fare based on daily travel distance and number of riders
  • Vanpool fares cover the cost of operating the vanpool
  • Commuter vans may be leased or personal vans may be used for commuting.

There are several ways to get involved with a vanpool:

  • To join an existing vanpool, call 800-535-6883 and ask for a matchlist or go online at www.commuterinfo.net and request a matchlist online.
  • To form a new vanpool, call us at 800-535-6883 and our vanpool specialist will help you every step of the way

Walking – Walking is an ideal form of commuting to and from work if you live within five miles of your destination.  Walking offers employees an opportunity to get in shape while commuting, greatly reduced commute costs, and improvement in overall attitude and morale.
